Author of one of The New York Times Best Sellers Milk and Honey, Rupi Kaur is an Indian-Canadian poet and author. She rose to prominence from Instagram and Tumblr by sharing her short visual poetry.

Her first performance was in the basement of the Punjabi Community Health Centre in Malton in 2009. Later, her first book Milk and Honey released in 2014 proved to be her career breakthrough & wrote another highly acclaimed book (her second book) entitled The Sun and Her Flowers in 2017.

From Anonymous Writing To Professional Author

During her high school days, Kaur shared her writing anonymously. She then began sharing her work on Tumblr under her own name and on Instagram by 2013. In 2014, she started sharing simple thematic illustrations.

Her first book titled Milk and Honey was published on 4th November 2014. The book divided in 4 chapters describes the change in women as smooth as milk and as thick as honey, while each chapter depict a different theme with a collection of observations, prose, and hand-drawn illustrations.

The book was on The New York Times Best Seller list for over 77 weeks selling 2.5 million copies. The book has been translated into 25 languages.

Similarly, her second book titled The Sun and Her Flowers was published on 3rd October 2017. The book has a variety of themes like loss, trauma, femininity healing, migration, and revolution.

As of 2019, Rupi was paid by Penguin Classics to write an introduction for a new edition of Khalil Gibran’s The Prophet.
