Sandra Smith was born on September 22, 1980, in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Her father was a floor trader at Chicago's Mercantile Exchange. She has five siblings, four sisters and one brother. 

Smith graduated from Wheaton Warrenville South High School in 1998.  She proceeded to Illinois State University, before transferring to Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and majored in business and minored in speech. 

Sandra also ran the 1,500 meters, mile, 3,000 meters, and steeplechase at various LSU track-and-field events. The 39-year-old former athlete still keeps her skills alive with her regular running practice in Central Park in New York City.
